Reef, Rhythm
and Retreats
Isla Marisol · Dangriga · Gales Point, Belize
Coral reefs, lonely islands, white beaches — that is about all most people associate with Belize. And it is true: the reefs are among the most beautiful in the Caribbean, and there are islands where for days you hear nothing but the waves. But look a little closer and you discover a country where culture is not put on display but lived. African roots, intertwined with those of the Caribbean’s first peoples, told through drums, dance, painting and food.
This journey leads to three places that could hardly be more different: a remote island in the middle of an atoll, an unassuming coastal town full of music, and the tip of a narrow peninsula where manatees drift through the lagoon.
Isla Marisol — far from the rest of the world
Where the world grows quiet
The boat has been under way for quite a while. With every nautical mile there are fewer other vessels, until only water and sky remain. Then it appears: a small island with palm trees, white sand and turquoise water. Exactly the way you always imagined paradise. What you don’t know yet: on this journey you will drum with the man who created the sound of Belize – and at the end you will sit by the fire with a master drummer while a manatee surfaces in the lagoon.
